Restoring a historic playhouse to its original grandeur through expert cost control solutions.

OCMI provided cost estimating services for the $16 million renovation of this historical theatre. Built in 1924, the Balboa Theater has been on the National Register of Historical Places since 1972.

OCMI’s cost estimates encompassed full-scale renovation and restoration; selective demolition and abatement; and seismic retrofitting. Our team also participated in formal cost reconciliation exercises with the Owner and Value Engineering charrettes with the architecture team.

After the building had been boarded up for many years, San Diego’s Centre City Development Corporation put together a plan for restoring the old vaudeville playhouse to its original grandeur. In addition to replacing 1,500 existing seats, the renovation scope included updating electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems; new lighting; and a modernized sound system.
