Ishan Illangasinghe

This month, we spotlight Ishan Illangasinghe, Cost Estimator I. He works alongside the Irvine team, preparing quantity takeoffs, analyzing construction costs, and developing accurate estimates for a variety of projects. Q: Why did you choose to pursue a career in your field?
A: I completed my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 2022, and during my studies I developed a strong interest in the construction industry. I became especially interested in construction cost estimation because it combines engineering knowledge, problem solving and attention to detail. I enjoy analyzing project requirements, understanding designs and preparing accurate estimates that help support successful construction projects. This field allows me to continue leading while contributing my skills to the construction industry.
Q: Who has had the biggest impact on your professional growth?
A: The people who have had the greatest impact on my professional growth are my senior colleagues, especially Kyle Kawar, Laith Kawar, and Shanta Suraweera. From my first day at OCMI, they have been generous with their time, knowledge, and guidance, helping me build a strong foundation in construction cost estimating. Their willingness to mentor me, answer questions, and challenge me to grow has played a significant role in my development, and I am truly grateful for their continued support.
I am also incredibly thankful to our Vice President, John Mauk, and Greg Fogg for their encouragement, leadership, and the opportunities they have provided throughout my career at OCMI. Their confidence in me has been instrumental in my professional growth and success.
Q: What skills have you developed the most since joining OCMI?
A: Since I joined the OCMI, I have developed my construction cost estimating skills the most. I have improved my ability to review project documents, perform quantity take offs, analyze cost, and prepare accurate estimates. I have also strengthened my communication skills by working with team members and clients. Overall, my experience at OCMI really helped me become more confident and continue growing as a construction cost estimator.
Q: What professional goals are you working toward over the next few years?
A: My goal over the next few years is to continue expanding my knowledge and experience in construction cost estimation by working on more complex projects and taking on greater responsibilities. I want to continue improving my estimating skills and provide high-quality, accurate estimates that support successful project outcomes. I am also planning to finish my master’s degree over the next few years.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
A: Outside of work, I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors. I do hiking, open water swimming in lakes, and free diving. These activities help me to stay healthy, refreshed, and motivated.
